5 to 7 Year Old Toothbrush Recommendations

At this age your child has most likely celebrated the loss of a few baby teeth, and you may have even seen a few permanent teeth or molars begin to grow in. As these permanent teeth come in, keeping them clean is vital for the long term health of your child’s teeth. At this age, your child should be able to brush their teeth by themselves, however proper monitoring is essential. Gingivitis occurs in an alarming 50 percent of all children. Keep your child’s teeth healthy by choosing the proper brush and developing a consistent brushing routine.

By monitoring your child, your child will get used to the daily routine.  Simple brushing tips and considerations include:

  • Choose a small, child-sized, soft-bristled toothbrush, like the Barbie or Spider-Man Firefly®.
  • Fluoride toothpaste should be used on your child’s teeth. Use caution because swallowing too much fluoride can result in white spots on their permanent teeth. To prevent this from happening, be sure to use a pea size amount of toothpaste and teach them to spit out the toothpaste and rinse their mouth after brushing.
  • Make sure that your child is brushing their teeth twice a day, once in the morning and just before bed. Replace the toothbrush every 3 months, or even sooner if it shows signs of wear. Never share toothbrushes between children.
  • At this stage flossing is very important. Your child probably cannot do this on their own yet, so you will need to floss their teeth once a day between all teeth that touch.
